The steel industry is an all-important one in modern society. But despite the fact that steel is so ubiquitous, there are a lot of misconceptions about this material — particularly in regards to galvanized steel. We’re setting the record straight on these commonly held beliefs below.
MISCONCEPTION: Galvanized steel is too costly to use for many applications.
Reality: There may be less expensive materials on the market, to be sure, but you’ll get much more for your money with galvanization. Also known as corrugated steel, this material requires very little maintenance (meaning there won’t be much needed in the way of repairs) and has much higher stability levels than other coatings provide. And in fact, galvanization costs have remained relatively stable while coatings made of powder or paint have continued to rise in price. In the long term, corrugated steel is a much better investment.
MISCONCEPTION: Concrete and aluminum are just as durable.
Reality: In terms of durability, corrugated steel definitely wins out. Structures made of concrete are subject to the same kinds of weather conditions and wear and tear that steel structures are, yet many steel structures outlast concrete ones by substantial amounts. Steel bridges can last more than 100 years with very little maintenance, and steel parts now are up to 30% stronger than they were even a decade ago. And while aluminum is definitely more lightweight than steel, it’s also a lot weaker and a lot less durable. It’s also ill-suited to climates with excess humidity or salt. Neither concrete nor aluminum is a viable substitute for steel.
MISCONCEPTION: Steel is good for industrial projects, but not much else.
Reality: While coated steel products are not always necessary outside of infrastructure, that doesn’t mean they can’t be used in that way. Corrugated steel simply has an extra protective layer, which means it may be appropriate for other applications outside of construction. And steel doesn’t always have to come with a zinc protective coating. Stainless steel can be used in homes and businesses to improve aesthetics and even reduce the need for cleaning. In addition, stainless and galvanized steel strapping is an integral part of the shipping industry. So while it’s popular to see corrugated steel used for structural means, that doesn’t indicate it can’t be used in other ways or that steel materials have specific limitations.
