If you plan to secure stainless steel strapping in position, you may need to purchase stainless steel wing seals. These relatively small items of hardware perform a large role in keeping the strapping securely in place around poles and posts. As tools for light-gauge banding, they are available in different sizes to address specific requirements.

Sizes

Different sizes of stainless steel wing seals serve diverse purposes. The most common sizes for stainless steel wing seals are ½” x 7/8″ and ¾” x 7/8″ sizes. Other sizes are available, although not as common. These are ⅝”, 1”, 1½” and 2”. In selecting the right size, it is imperative to match the wing seals with the corresponding steel strapping. For example, a 1” wing seal is designed for a ½” stainless steel strapping and tensor.

Composition

While it is possible to obtain wing seals in other materials, including aluminum, the standard metal is stainless steel. While this material offers a wide range of choices in characteristics indicated in types, two types have proven to be the most common. These are:

  • Type 304
  • Type 316

Each is manufactured to the stringent and latest specifications of the ASTM D3953 and, if in the United States, the FED SPEC QQ-S-781H.

Stainless steel wings seals are small pieces of hardware that have big jobs within many industrial and municipal settings. They are used for light gauge banding to make sure whatever they strap down is securely fastened quickly and easily by standard banding tools.

And while these seals are specifically designed for light duty use, they come with the many advantages of using stainless steel including:

  • Improved corrosion resistance
  • High breaking strength (varies with the type of alloy chosen)
  • Flexibility for use in different applications
