What Purpose Do Aluminum Wing Seals Serve?

By August 13, 2021No Comments

What is the purpose of aluminum wing seals? Aluminum bands and seals are typically used to secure metal fittings and jacketings over insulation. These aluminum bands and seals are typically available in half inch and three quarter inch widths. Roll weights and lengths for aluminum bands will differ, depending on your particular needs.

Many banding or strapping services provide a wide range of different aluminum bands and seals, such as stamped non-asbestos banding, various lengths, and assorted colors. Here is what you need to know about the purpose of the aluminum wing seal:

What are stainless steel wing seals?

Stainless steel or aluminum wing seals are small pieces of hardware that are effective within multiple different municipal and industrial settings. These wing seals are used for light gauge banding to ensure that whatever they strap down is securely fastened as easily and quickly as possible with standard banding tools.

These small wing seals are manufactured with United States made and high quality stainless steel, including Type 201 and Type 316. These wing seals are specifically designed for light duty use, and they come with a number of different benefits of using stainless steel, including the flexibility for use in different applications, high breaking strength that varies with the kind of alloy chosen, and improved corrosion resistance.

How wing seals work

To secure and tighten stainless steel banding, the ends of the steel band are wrapped around and into a buckle before tightening the straps. The ears are hammered down, which secures the band. Wing seals are used exactly like buckles but normally with a lighter gauge or thickness band. As a necessary and versatile item to a wide range of businesses and personal sectors, seal fittings are used in a diverse range of places, including street signs and oilfields:

  • Street signs. In construction, workers use wing seals to secure stop lights and signs to poles, so that the intersection is clearly marked and safe.
  • Oilfield. Workers on an oil rig rely on secure pipes and tubing within the drilling platforms, as well as managing toxic waste. Secure wing seals are important for the wellness of people in these cases.

Limitations of wing seals

Wing seals are usually designed for use with ISO Lite Gauge Band. They are corrosion resistant and have the strength of stainless steel, but their use should be limited to light duty applications. They are easy to install, since they are easily closed with a hammer on any surface.
